Oaxaca is also part of the Mesoamerican biodiversity hotspot, meaning that it is highly biodiverse; but that biodiversity is under severe threat. Preserving and restoring the diversity of Oaxacan ecosystems is also essential given the huge diversity of useful plants in the region. Mexico is the homeland of many of the world’s most important crops, and hundreds of other useful species grow wild and in traditional farms and gardens.
